Naming Ceremonies

One of the signs of passing youth is the birth of a sense of fellowship with other human beings as we take our place among them.

Virginia Wolfe

We all know names have power. The power isn’t magical or secret — it’s the power we all possess to say our own name, to use our name as a part of our identity. Our name is almost always the first thing we tell people when we meet them for the first time, and the thing we hope they will remember when we meet them again. Names are important to others as well. People use names to associate members of their community with other things they remember about them, like the name of a person who makes their coffee in the morning, or the name of the child who has just been born.

The act of naming someone is an act of acceptance — a sign that this person has a place amongst us all. A naming ceremony can be a way of welcoming a young life into your family and community; a way of allowing significant people in the child’s life to express their hopes for the child and their intentions to help the child throughout their life.

As a special service, I can also put you in touch with a local calligrapher who specialises in illuminated name plates.
